My first thought when I heard that Kobus had arranged for us to show the Jesus Film at Magwero was “but how will it work?” Magwero is a boarding school for children who are either deaf or blind .It is also a refuge for albino children who are persecuted and killed for muti (medicine sold by witch-doctors ) At Magwero the albino children assist the blind children and through this their self-confidence and leadership develop.
Before showing the film, we gave them a verbal and sign language summary.
In the cold night air under the stars these kids sat mesmerized with their eyes and ears glued to the screen. Rev. Kobus then spoke to them in Chichewa and under torch light it was “translated ” to sign language . A chorus of young voices followed him in prayer.
With joy in our hearts we hugged the headmistress and teachers before traveling the dirt road back to Chipata.
